WIFLE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

BACKGROUND

WIFLE is an organization with a goal to achieve gender equity within federal law enforcement through the recruitment, retention and promotion of qualified women in law enforcement, and develop an information-sharing and support network for all women in law enforcement.

In August , 2003 the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics announced that as of June, 2002, there were more than 96,000 full time personnel authorized to make arrests and carry firearms in the Federal government.   Women represent 14.8% of that workforce.  There remains much to be done to achieve gender balance within the federal agencies.  It is in the spirit of achieving this goal that WIFLE offers a scholarship.   

THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Purpose:  WIFLE will offer a scholarship(s) to talented individual(s) to meet the demands in the field of law enforcement and to foster the professional development of those engaged in law enforcement. The dollar amount of each scholarship will be approximately $2,000, but may vary based on numerous factors.  Awards may be renewable on subsequent applications.

Eligibility:  WIFLE scholarships are awarded on the basis of the student's academic potential, achievement and commitment to serving communities in the field of law enforcement.   The scholarship is open to all eligible persons.  To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must:

· be a full-time student at an accredited four year college or university; or currently enrolled full time in a fully accredited community college with the intention of transferring to a four year degree; 
 · major in criminal justice or a related discipline, leading to a four year degree (students in graduate and postgraduate programs are also eligible; students pursuing Associate degrees are not eligible);
· have completed at least one full academic year of college work at an accredited college or university or community college;  
· have a 3.0 overall grade point average;  
· demonstrate a commitment to the community through a five-hundred word essay describing the community project you are involved in currently or within the last year and the results or impact to the community. 
· have at least one community leader or members of a community group or police official sponsor your application with a written statement of support.  
· submit a completed application with the required information, 500 word essay, transcripts, and a recommendation letter from a community leader or police official. 

Application:  Information and applications are available through the WIFLE web site:  at www.wifle.org.  Applications must be received by the Scholarship Coordinator no later than May 3, 2004 .  Applications that are incomplete or received after the deadline will not be considered.  Letters of recommendation should be mailed with the application, if possible, but in every case must be received prior to the deadline.  Recipients will be notified by May 21, 2004 , and awards will be mailed directly to the institution on the recipients' behalf.
